Richard was excited as he drove to surprise his daughter, Deidre, on his 80th birthday. His wife’s passing four years ago had created a noticeable gap in their relationship. Later that night, Richard set off in a Valiant loaded with hidden contraband. As he neared a gas station close to the border, he stopped to use the restroom. He parked near a police cruiser, and a German Shepherd inside began barking furiously.
